LATEST ON THE SUBMERSIBLE – WRITTEN 2:28 A.M. ET WEDNESDAY MORNING:  Possible signs of life have been heard by units searching for the submersible that was sent down with five passengers to explore the wreck of the Titanic.  From Daily Mail:

Noises have been detected from the search area of the missing deep-sea vessel near the wreck site of the Titanic as those on board face a dwindling supply of oxygen, the US Coast Guard has confirmed.

The submersible, named Titan, lost communication with tour operators on Sunday while about 435 miles south of St John's, Newfoundland during a voyage to the shipwreck off the coast of Canada.

Titan has five people on board, including British billionaire adventurer Hamish Harding, and on Tuesday the US Coast Guard estimated the 22ft long OceanGate Expeditions vessel had just 40 hours of oxygen left.

The others on board are Shahzada Dawood, his son Suleman, 19, OceanGate's chief executive and founder Stockton Rush and French submersible pilot Paul-Henry Nargeolet.

A Canadian aircraft heard noises at 30-minute intervals in the area the capsule vanished on Tuesday. The banging was noted in emails exchanged with the US Department of Homeland Security and seen by Rolling Stone, but it was not clear when they were heard.

Coast Guard officials confirmed underwater noises were heard by a plane and operations were 'relocated' to determine the origin. But as of early Wednesday, they have 'yielded negative results'.

Rescue crews will further analyze the data, which could be considered for future search plans in the deep Atlantic Ocean since the submersible launched Sunday and quickly lost contact with the surface.

Richard Garriot de Cayeux, President of The Explorers Club, confirmed in a Tuesday night social media post that 'there is cause for hope.'

He said in a statement: 'We have much greater confidence that there is cause for hope, based on data from the field - we understand that likely signs of life have been detected at the site.'

Billionaire Hamish Harding, French explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet, OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush and Shahzada Dawood, 48, a UK-based board member of the Prince's Trust charity, and his son Sulaiman Dawood, 19, are reported to be the people stuck in the sub.

The DHS memo on the banging sounds said the Canadian air force and coast guard launched a Boeing P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft, which has underwater detection capabilities in the air.

'It reported a contact in a position close to the distress position,' the memo read. 'The P8 heard banging sounds in the area every 30 minutes. Four hours later additional sonar was deployed and banging was still heard.'

The timing - or cause - of the banging is not revealed by the memo but it has raised hopes that rescuers could locate the submersible.

Garriot de Cayeux added The Explorers Club are confident the U.S. Coast Guard 'precisely understand the experienced personnel and tech we can deploy' and 'believe they are doing everything possible with all resources they have'.

One of the five men on the ship, Harding, is a founding member of the Board of Trustees for the Explorers Club.

The group said they have a direct lines to Congress, The Coast Guard, Air Force and Navy and the White House.

COMMENT:   We can hope, and should, but the reality of time is upon us.

YOU MEAN, THERE'S SOME MATURITY OUT THERE?  Yeah, there is.  And it's actually coming from Europe.  This is an important development.  From Daily Caller:

Two of Europe’s largest energy firms are pivoting from green energy back to their core oil and gas businesses, a move that industry experts tell the Daily Caller News Foundation signals a willingness to take political hits as oil and gas continue to be major sources of revenue.

Both Shell and fellow U.K. energy firm BP opted against further cuts to oil production recently, in a bid to restore investor confidence as their renewable ventures struggled, according to Bloomberg. While the moves were met with criticism from climate-focused investors — activist investors and protestors attempted to storm the stage at Shell’s annual shareholder meeting in late May — the companies are likely to stay the course despite criticism, thanks to the reliability of oil and gas to drive profits despite the emergence of green energy, Dan Kish, senior research fellow at the Institute for Energy Research, told the DCNF.

“Smart energy executives looking at the long term recognize that politics are fleeting,” Kish said. “Politicians may be flighty and distracted by today’s shiny objects, but real business sense combined with a knowledge of engineering and physics shows that real energy makes good business because it is what people need and want.”

Shell CEO Wael Sawan described his company’s shift as a “fundamental culture change” during a Wednesday presentation intended to draw investors, especially American ones, to support the company, The Wall Street Journal reported. Shell performed poorly in 2022 compared to U.S. titans Exxon Mobil and Chevron in 2022, and Sawan has made playing catch up a priority.

BP made a similar decision, opting to increase investments in oil and gas while slowing its advancement toward green alternatives.

“At the end of the day, we’re responding to what society wants,” BP Chief Executive Bernard Looney said.

Ryan Yonk, senior research faculty at the American Institute for Economic Research, described many green investments and climate commitments as a sort of “green-washing” that companies are more likely to view as a “cost of doing business” as opposed to a genuine driver of profits, in a statement to the DCNF. BP saw shares surge more than 15% in the days following its February announcement that it would cut just 25% of its hydrocarbon output by 2030, as opposed to its original target of 40%, according to Reuters.

“The profitability of these types of endeavors is generally much lower than market-driven innovation and growth because they are defensive in nature and driven not by consumer demand but by either actual regulatory action or the expectation that it will occur,” Yonk said. “Fossil fuels are currently, and the evidence suggests they will be for the foreseeable future a significant and important part of energy production in the US and across the world.”

COMMENT:  A breath of the proverbial fresh air.  Now that sounds like real common sense, business sense, and energy sense.  Someone, maybe even more than one person, took a look at the facts and acted accordingly.  I hope to see this kind of thinking here, although the government and the trend-driven press will try to suppress it.

Yes, fossil fuels will be with us a long time.  Electric vehicles, yet to be proved on the open road.

JUNE 17-18,  2023

BIDEN FACES TOUGH ROAD:  We always caution about the use of polls, especially this far before a presidential election.  But I think you'll see many more than usual this year because the election facts are just so weird.  We have a clearly impaired president trying to get re-elected, facing an indicted frontrunner of the opposition party.  What a movie!

So the polling must adjust to the realities.  A new poll shows just what Joe Biden is facing.  From Daily Mail:

A new poll for DailyMail.com lays bare the challenge facing President Joe Biden as he runs for reelection: Almost half of Democrats believe he is too old for the job, and 52 of all voters believe they are worse off since he became president.

Republicans have used both as attack lines in their campaigns to unseat Biden.

The president has always been gaffe-prone, but now any botched comment is seized on as evidence that the 80-year-old is no longer fit for office.

And after presiding over gas price spikes and a year of rampant inflation, Republicans believe they can beat him on pocket book issues.

A new DailyMail.com/J.L. Partners poll shows how Biden is vulnerable on both issues.

It found that 71 percent of likely general election voters believe he is too old to be president — let alone at the end of a second term, when he would be 86.

The numbers are skewed by political preference, but even 49 percent of Democrats agree.
Only 28 percent of them believe he is 'about the right age.'

Biden has tried to laugh off concerns that he no longer has the energy or sharpness for the job, but those efforts have sometimes backfired.

On Friday he tried it in front of a friendly crowd at a gun control rally in Connecticut.
'A lot of you are tired. You're tired. No, I get it. Try being 110 and doing it again,' he said to laughs.

But he left everyone confused at the end of the speech when his final words were: 'God save the Queen.'

At 80, Biden is already the nation's oldest president. Every day he extends the record.

He is in generally good health and experts say he might even be a 'superager,' one of a small number of people whose cognitive functioning is decades younger than his body.

That is lost on most voters, said James Johnson, co-founder of J.L. Partners, which conducted the poll.

'There are few things that unite American voters, but there is one: the belief that Biden is too old to be president,' he said.

'Decisive margins across all age groups, ethnic groups, and political parties agree with the sentiment.

'And worryingly for the current president, those most likely to say they are worse off under Biden's policies include groups with disproportionate impact come an election: Independent voters and 45-64 year olds.

'Though he managed to avoid his age becoming a pivotal issue in 2020, it looks set to be the defining hesitation in voters' minds next year.'

COMMENT:  And Biden's age problem will be worse on election day 2024, more than a year and a half from now.

And all voters will know that if Biden is elected, Kamala Harris is likely to become president.  There's a biological reality here. There's also a political reality.  Harris is less popular than Biden.

We have to wonder whether the president will actually run.  He's an old hand at politics, and he knows what the polls are saying.  A graceful withdrawal might be his best option.

SHORT TAKES ON THE DRIFTING WRECKAGE:

I AM SO SHOCKED – FROM THE WASHINGTON FREE BEACON:  Nearly 100 percent of political donations from self-identified fact checkers—including those whose employers claim journalistic neutrality—go to Democrats, a Washington Free Beacon analysis of federal campaign finance disclosures found.  The Free Beacon reviewed political donations over the past four election cycles from those who identified their occupation as "fact checker." $22,580 of the $22,683 in political donations that came from self-identified fact checkers during that time—a whopping 99.5 percent—went to Democrats and liberal groups. Only three of the fact checker donations made during that period went to Republicans. Top recipients include socialist Vermont senator Bernie Sanders, who during the seven-year period received ten times more fact checker money than every Republican combined.  The findings contradict claims of neutrality from top fact-checking operations. Fact checkers for the New York Times and Reuters, for example, contributed to President Joe Biden, failed South Carolina Democratic Senate candidate Jaime Harrison, and liberal Massachusetts senator Elizabeth Warren's presidential campaign.   Not in any way surprising.  The left controls mainstream journalism, and nothing will be done about it.

COMMON SENSE – FROM COLLEGE FIX:  Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Thursday signed into law legislation that prohibits biological men from competing in women’s collegiate sports.
Senate Bill 15 requires collegiate athletes play on the team that corresponds with their biological sex.  “Women’s college athletic teams are being threatened. Collegiate records that women set are being threatened,” Gov. Abbott said at a bill signing ceremony for the Save Women’s Sports Act.  “The legacy of women’s sports will be safeguarded for generations to come,” he said. “Women in Texas can be assured that the integrity of their sports will be protected.”  If a school or team violates the new law it stipulates they are entitled to bring a civil action for injunctive relief.  Texas joins Missouri and Alabama in passing similar measures in favor of women’s college sports in recent weeks.  Supporters of the bill, such as Mary Elizabeth Castle, director of government relations for Texas Values, told The College Fix it is a “huge victory for Texas women college athletes.”
A major victory for sanity.  Young women train for years to be the best, often competing for scholarships.  They shouldn't be confronted by biological men who now identify as women.  Please note that the misnamed "women's movement" didn't lift a finger to help female athletes in this dispute.  What a disgrace.

BUT THE MADNESS ELSEWHERE CONTINUES – FROM CAMPUS REFORM:   Springfield College in Massachusetts offers pronoun guidelines that discourage students from using the words “mother,” “father,” and other “gender specific” terms.  “Springfield College is committed to valuing and validating the gender identity and expression of members of the campus community,” its website states.  “One way that Springfield College seeks to create gender-inclusive academic, living, and work environments is by encouraging all members of the campus community to indicate the pronouns they use for themselves, if desired, in classes, residence halls, workplaces, and other settings, and by encouraging members of the campus community to respect these pronouns,” it continues.  The “gendered” nouns to avoid include: “mother/father,” “sister/brother,” “mankind,” “man-made,” “boyfriend/girlfriend,” “husband/wife,” “son/daughter,” “freshman,” and “congressman.”   As such, Springfield instead encourages the corresponding “gender-inclusive” nouns: “parent,” “sibling,” “people/human beings/humanity,” “machine-made/synthetic/artificial,” “partner,” “spouse/significant other,” “child/kid,” “first-year student,” and “legislator/congressional representative.”
Happy Father's Day.
