JUNE 17-18,  2023

BIDEN FACES TOUGH ROAD:  We always caution about the use of polls, especially this far before a presidential election.  But I think you'll see many more than usual this year because the election facts are just so weird.  We have a clearly impaired president trying to get re-elected, facing an indicted frontrunner of the opposition party.  What a movie!

So the polling must adjust to the realities.  A new poll shows just what Joe Biden is facing.  From Daily Mail:

A new poll for DailyMail.com lays bare the challenge facing President Joe Biden as he runs for reelection: Almost half of Democrats believe he is too old for the job, and 52 of all voters believe they are worse off since he became president.

Republicans have used both as attack lines in their campaigns to unseat Biden.

The president has always been gaffe-prone, but now any botched comment is seized on as evidence that the 80-year-old is no longer fit for office.

And after presiding over gas price spikes and a year of rampant inflation, Republicans believe they can beat him on pocket book issues.

A new DailyMail.com/J.L. Partners poll shows how Biden is vulnerable on both issues.

It found that 71 percent of likely general election voters believe he is too old to be president — let alone at the end of a second term, when he would be 86.

The numbers are skewed by political preference, but even 49 percent of Democrats agree.
Only 28 percent of them believe he is 'about the right age.'

Biden has tried to laugh off concerns that he no longer has the energy or sharpness for the job, but those efforts have sometimes backfired.

On Friday he tried it in front of a friendly crowd at a gun control rally in Connecticut.
'A lot of you are tired. You're tired. No, I get it. Try being 110 and doing it again,' he said to laughs.

But he left everyone confused at the end of the speech when his final words were: 'God save the Queen.'

At 80, Biden is already the nation's oldest president. Every day he extends the record.

He is in generally good health and experts say he might even be a 'superager,' one of a small number of people whose cognitive functioning is decades younger than his body.

That is lost on most voters, said James Johnson, co-founder of J.L. Partners, which conducted the poll.

'There are few things that unite American voters, but there is one: the belief that Biden is too old to be president,' he said.

'Decisive margins across all age groups, ethnic groups, and political parties agree with the sentiment.

'And worryingly for the current president, those most likely to say they are worse off under Biden's policies include groups with disproportionate impact come an election: Independent voters and 45-64 year olds.

'Though he managed to avoid his age becoming a pivotal issue in 2020, it looks set to be the defining hesitation in voters' minds next year.'

COMMENT:  And Biden's age problem will be worse on election day 2024, more than a year and a half from now.

And all voters will know that if Biden is elected, Kamala Harris is likely to become president.  There's a biological reality here. There's also a political reality.  Harris is less popular than Biden.

We have to wonder whether the president will actually run.  He's an old hand at politics, and he knows what the polls are saying.  A graceful withdrawal might be his best option.

SHORT TAKES ON THE DRIFTING WRECKAGE:

I AM SO SHOCKED – FROM THE WASHINGTON FREE BEACON:  Nearly 100 percent of political donations from self-identified fact checkers—including those whose employers claim journalistic neutrality—go to Democrats, a Washington Free Beacon analysis of federal campaign finance disclosures found.  The Free Beacon reviewed political donations over the past four election cycles from those who identified their occupation as "fact checker." $22,580 of the $22,683 in political donations that came from self-identified fact checkers during that time—a whopping 99.5 percent—went to Democrats and liberal groups. Only three of the fact checker donations made during that period went to Republicans. Top recipients include socialist Vermont senator Bernie Sanders, who during the seven-year period received ten times more fact checker money than every Republican combined.  The findings contradict claims of neutrality from top fact-checking operations. Fact checkers for the New York Times and Reuters, for example, contributed to President Joe Biden, failed South Carolina Democratic Senate candidate Jaime Harrison, and liberal Massachusetts senator Elizabeth Warren's presidential campaign.   Not in any way surprising.  The left controls mainstream journalism, and nothing will be done about it.

COMMON SENSE – FROM COLLEGE FIX:  Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Thursday signed into law legislation that prohibits biological men from competing in women’s collegiate sports.
Senate Bill 15 requires collegiate athletes play on the team that corresponds with their biological sex.  “Women’s college athletic teams are being threatened. Collegiate records that women set are being threatened,” Gov. Abbott said at a bill signing ceremony for the Save Women’s Sports Act.  “The legacy of women’s sports will be safeguarded for generations to come,” he said. “Women in Texas can be assured that the integrity of their sports will be protected.”  If a school or team violates the new law it stipulates they are entitled to bring a civil action for injunctive relief.  Texas joins Missouri and Alabama in passing similar measures in favor of women’s college sports in recent weeks.  Supporters of the bill, such as Mary Elizabeth Castle, director of government relations for Texas Values, told The College Fix it is a “huge victory for Texas women college athletes.”
A major victory for sanity.  Young women train for years to be the best, often competing for scholarships.  They shouldn't be confronted by biological men who now identify as women.  Please note that the misnamed "women's movement" didn't lift a finger to help female athletes in this dispute.  What a disgrace.

BUT THE MADNESS ELSEWHERE CONTINUES – FROM CAMPUS REFORM:   Springfield College in Massachusetts offers pronoun guidelines that discourage students from using the words “mother,” “father,” and other “gender specific” terms.  “Springfield College is committed to valuing and validating the gender identity and expression of members of the campus community,” its website states.  “One way that Springfield College seeks to create gender-inclusive academic, living, and work environments is by encouraging all members of the campus community to indicate the pronouns they use for themselves, if desired, in classes, residence halls, workplaces, and other settings, and by encouraging members of the campus community to respect these pronouns,” it continues.  The “gendered” nouns to avoid include: “mother/father,” “sister/brother,” “mankind,” “man-made,” “boyfriend/girlfriend,” “husband/wife,” “son/daughter,” “freshman,” and “congressman.”   As such, Springfield instead encourages the corresponding “gender-inclusive” nouns: “parent,” “sibling,” “people/human beings/humanity,” “machine-made/synthetic/artificial,” “partner,” “spouse/significant other,” “child/kid,” “first-year student,” and “legislator/congressional representative.”
Happy Father's Day.

JUNE 15-16,  2023

WHERE DOES TRUMP STAND?  We'll be seeing more polling than usual at this point in the presidential race because of the odd position that Donald Trump occupies – former president, current candidate for the same office, and indicted citizen.  I don't think you could write this in a novel and get it published.

A new poll shows public opinion on Trump taking shape.  From Fox:

Republicans are rallying behind former President Donald Trump's 2024 presidential campaign, according to a new poll that reveals an increase in support among the GOP following his two indictments.

After being indicted on charges related to alleged mishandling of classified documents, a Marist Poll survey found that 56% of Americans — the majority being Democrats and independents — think Trump should halt his 2024 presidential campaign, while 43% think he should remain in the race.

But the poll reveals strong GOP support for Trump, with 83% of Republicans supporting his run for president amid the investigations, while 87% of Democrats and 58% of independents think he should drop out of the race.

The majority of Republicans, 76%, reported having a favorable opinion of the former president, increasing from 68% in a February poll.

"As former President Trump deals with his latest legal woes, Republicans are mostly standing with him, while Democrats are calling for him to exit the 2024 campaign," Lee M. Miringoff, director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion, said alongside the polling results. "Time will tell if this pattern holds, but for now, Republicans are grounded on where they stand on Trump regardless of these unfolding events."

Trump received a boost in support from Republicans around his indictment, with 50% believing he did nothing wrong, up five points from 45% in a March poll.

Looking forward to 2024, 64% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents said they will support Trump in his campaign if he does not drop out, while 32% said they are going to support another GOP candidate.

The poll also revealed a decrease among Americans who believe Trump did something wrong in the indictment, dropping from 75% in March to 73% in the June survey.

The results suggest that 78% of Democrats and 50% of independents believe Trump broke the law.

COMMENT:  Read the rest.  Trump's legal problems are a continuing, fast-moving story.  Numbers can easily change quickly.  But the fact that Trump's indictments have come so close to the presidential campaign understandably raises suspicion that the timing isn't accidental, but part of a political plot launched by the Biden side.  True or not, that suspicion can help Trump maintain support.  But for how long is the question?

Stand by for more.

ENDGAME FOR JOE?  One effect of last week's Trump indictment has been the newly energized campaign by Republicans to get to the bottom of Joe Biden's highly suspicious "business" dealings.   The campaign seems to be making some progress.  From PJ Media:

This week we learned that there are reportedly multiple recordings of Joe Biden accepting a $5 million bribe while he was vice president from Mykola Zlochevsky, co-founder of Burisma Holdings — a detail that the FBI deliberately tried to hide from Congress, no less.

Despite the efforts to protect Biden, the word is out, and Biden was unable to avoid reporters asking him about the recordings.

On Tuesday, when Biden was leaving the White House East Room after an event, New York Post reporter Steven Nelson questioned him about the alleged audio recordings.
“Are there tapes that you accepted bribes, President Biden? Is that true?” Nelson asked as Biden walked by. He clearly heard the question, stopped, and turned with a grin and a chuckle, but said nothing, before turning back and continuing on his way.

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) revealed the alleged existence of the recordings on Monday in a speech on the Senate floor.

“The foreign national who allegedly bribed Joe and Hunter Biden allegedly has audio recording[s] of his conversations with them,” Grassley said. “17 such recordings. […] 15 audio recordings of phone calls between him and Hunter Biden […] two audio recordings of phone calls between him and then-Vice President Joe Biden. These recording[s] were allegedly kept as a sort of insurance policy for the foreign national in case he got into a tight spot.”

That Biden stopped at all in response to the question was very telling, but his laughing it off was actually quite insulting. This isn’t a situation that Biden can just laugh off and pretend doesn’t exist. A longtime FBI informant revealed the existence of these recordings to the FBI; it is highly unlikely that this informant was making this up. The FBI knew of these recordings from the FD-1023 report that it first refused to provide to the House Oversight Committee.

It wasn’t until after the House Oversight Committee threatened FBI Director Wray with contempt that the bureau finally showed the document to the committee, with the mention of the recordings redacted. When you consider the facts, it’s easy to conclude that the recordings do exist and that the FBI knows they exist.

This won’t be the last time Biden will face questions about the recordings. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was asked about it on Tuesday and avoided the question.
‘Senator Chuck Grassley made some statements yesterday on the Senate floor, saying that this foreign national on the FBI 1023 form apparently has 15 recorded conversations with Hunter Biden and claims to have two with the president,” a reporter asked. “Is there — is the White House aware of any recordings in which the President might be on tape speaking to a Burisma executive?”

“So the President spoke to this,” Jean-Pierre claimed. “I think he was shouted a question about this at the Thursday press conference.  And I’m just going to quote him and say, ‘It’s malarkey.'”

COMMENT:  One president's malarkey is another's impeachable offense.  Stand by.  The Republicans seem serious this time.
