SHORT TAKES ON THE DRIFTING WRECKAGE:

SHOULD THEY REALLY BE CALLED "DOCTOR"?  From Fox:  Columbia University received intense backlash online after a resurfaced video showed medical students reciting a revised version of the Hippocratic Oath that included tenets of critical race theory.  The video, posted by nonprofit Mythinformed Milwaukee, shows the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons Class of 2025 during a White coat ceremony reciting an oath led by Lisa Mellman, MD, a senior associate dean for student affairs and the Samuel Rudin Professor of Psychiatry.  According to a news release on the Columbia University Irving Medical Center website, the August 2021 ceremony was the first time in the medical school's 255-year history that the incoming medical students recited their personalized Class Oath, a spin on the Hippocratic Oath to "better reflect the values [students] wish to uphold as they enter their medical training.  The students must take the original Hippocratic Oath and have the opportunity to participate in the student-led initiative. In the future, each class will have the chance to create its own Oath."  The "New Hippocratic Oath" reciting was also published on the Columbia University YouTube channel and included the pledge in full.  "We enter the profession of medicine with appreciation for the opportunity to build on the scientific and humanistic achievements of the past. We also recognize the acts and systems of oppression effected in the name of medicine. We take this Oath of service to begin building a future grounded in truth, restoration, and equity to fulfill medicine's capacity to liberate," the Oath begins.  Imagine, in less than a decade we'll be able to go to a doctor who is board certified in socialism.  To our good health.

A FUNNY THING HAPPENED TO JOE BIDEN ON THE WAY TO A SECOND TERM.  The operative word is "inflation."  It ain't over.  From CNBC:

Inflation turned higher to start 2023, as rising shelter, gas and fuel prices took their toll on consumers, the Labor Department reported Tuesday.

The consumer price index, which measures a broad basket of common goods and services, rose 0.5% in January, which translated to an annual gain of 6.4%. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had been looking for respective increases of 0.4% and 6.2%.

Markets were volatile following the release, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average down about 200 points at the open and heading lower.

Rising shelter costs accounted for about half the monthly increase, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said in the report. The component accounts for more than one-third of the index and rose 0.7% on the month and was up 7.9% from a year ago. The CPI had risen 0.1% in December.

Energy also was a significant contributor, up 2% and 8.7%, respectively, while food costs rose 0.5% and 10.1%, respectively.

Rising prices meant a loss in real pay for workers. Average hourly earnings fell 0.2% for the month and were down 1.8% from a year ago, according to a separate BLS report that adjusts wages for inflation.

While price increases had been abating in recent months, January’s data shows inflation is still a force in a U.S. economy in danger of slipping into recession this year.

That has come despite Federal Reserve efforts to quell the problem. The central bank has hiked its benchmark interest rate eight times since March 2022 as inflation rose to its highest level in 41 years last summer.

“Inflation is easing but the path to lower inflation will not likely be smooth,” said Jeffrey Roach, chief economist at LPL Financial. “The Fed will not make decisions based on just one report but clearly the risks are rising that inflation will not cool fast enough for the Fed’s liking.”

In recent days, Fed Chairman Jerome Powell has talked about “disinflationary” forces at play, but January’s numbers show the central bank probably still has work to do.

COMMENT:  What is often not discussed by the talking heads is that any inflation has a lasting effect.  When the Biden White House experiences a good month, and says that inflation is slowing, it's skipping over the damage done by the inflation that has already occurred.  I haven't seen any decline in food prices, have you?  They just go up, and families will continue to pay them.

WHY AM I NOT CONVINCED?  Why is it that I think we've been given much less than the truth about the "objects" we whacked just days ago?  Maybe I'm just paranoid, or awake?  From Fox:

The three unidentified flying objects (UFOs) that were shot down by the U.S. military over the weekend were "not engaged in hostile actions," according to sources with knowledge of an unclassified briefing for members of the House of Representatives Tuesday, but the military could not rule out whether a hostile country may have sent them.

And which country would that be?  Does it have a name?  Maybe "The Land of Oz."

A source with knowledge of the House briefing told Fox News Digital that the military determination that the UFOs weren’t hostile was "a determination about offensive capability not a determination as to motive or source country."

If they haven't recovered the wreckage yet, how could they be sure of capability?

So therefore, the military's "legal assessment" is that the objects were "not engaged in hostile actions," but they could not rule out whether a hostile country may have sent them.

Fox News learned that the House lawmakers were briefed by Assistant Secretary of Defense for Homeland Defense and Hemispheric Affairs Melissa Dalton, Director of All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office Sean Kirkpatrick, Lt. Gen. Douglas A. Sims II, Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Commander Gen. Glen VanHerck of North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and United States Northern Command.

The source also said that the three objects shot down over the weekend were substantially different in size from the Chinese spy balloon that was shot down a week before over the coast of South Carolina. One was shaped more closely to a balloon-like object and the other two were the size of an ATV.

The Chinese spy balloon differed, as it was 200 feet tall, and the payload was 90 feet across.

COMMENT:  It's reported that the administration is floating the word "benign" to describe the last three objects shot down in the northwest part of the continent.  But all three were flying at altitudes where airliners fly.  A collision, even with a large balloon, could damage an airliner, especially if parts of the balloon were sucked into an engine.  That is not benign.

One administration spokesman speculated that the objects could have been research balloons sent up by universities or even corporations.  But the objects had nothing written on them.  Seems a bit farfetched to me to suggest that old Podunk U would send up a balloon with no I.D.

Not happy with the answers.  Not happy at all.  We have a large economic relationship with China, with many dollars changing hands and many careers involved.  Could there be some tampering with facts here?  Not charging.  I don't have direct evidence.  But just thinking.

BALLOONGATE UPDATE:  Very few answers.  From CNN:

The unidentified flying object shot down in Canadian airspace on Saturday appeared to be a “small, metallic balloon with a tethered payload below it,” according to a Pentagon memo sent to lawmakers on Monday and obtained by CNN.

The memo offers the first official details of one of the three objects shot down in recent days that was previously described as a “cylindrical object.” The object crossed near “US sensitive sites” before it was shot down, the memo said.

Defense officials also wrote in the memo to lawmakers that the object shot down over Lake Huron, in Michigan on Sunday, “subsequently slowly descended” into the water after impact.

A defense official told CNN late Monday that the Pentagon has not sent an official memo to Capitol Hill but acknowledged they are continuing to brief and send correspondence to relevant committees.

The new details come as lawmakers on Capitol Hill are pressing to gain a better understanding of why the Biden administration shot down three unidentified objects in three days following the take down of the Chinese spy balloon that traversed the US the previous weekend.

Lawmakers and congressional aides told CNN that the consecutive shoot-downs felt on the surface like an overcorrection to the Chinese spy balloon incident, though they cautioned that it was still too early to say definitively.

“What’s happening now is we’re actually looking for these with extra vigilance. We’re looking for them in different ways. We’re starting to see them in different ways,” Colorado Democratic Rep. Jason Crow said on “CNN This Morning” on Monday.

“My speculative guess as why we’re seeing these things happen in quick succession is now we’re really attuned to looking for them, right?” Rep. Jim Himes of Connecticut, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” Sunday.

“The truth is that most of our sensors and most of what we were looking for didn’t look like balloons. Now, of course, we’re looking for them. So, I think we’re probably finding more stuff,” Himes added.

The Senate is holding a classified briefing for all senators on the shot down objects on Tuesday, according to a spokesman for Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.

COMMENT:  First time in a long time that I'm seeing Democrats interested in national defense.  Of course, that doesn't include AOC and her crowd.

And I worry that we're missing something.  The last three "objects" that we shot down haven't even been identified.  What if one had aboard a nuclear weapon that could be detonated over the United States?  We'll have to wait for answers, but maybe these last two weeks were the wakeup call that America has needed.

STILL ONE MORE:  An Air Force jet has shot down still one more unidentified object, this time over Lake Huron, within the United States.  From Fox:

The U.S. military on Sunday shot down another unidentified flying object over Lake Huron in Michigan.

The Defense Department (DOD) said President Joe Biden, shortly before 2:42 p.m., directed an F-16 to fire an AIM-9X missile to shoot down an airborne object flying at around 20,000 feet over Lake Huron.

The DOD said the path and altitude "raised concerns, including that it could be a hazard to civil aviation."

"The location chosen for this shoot down afforded us the opportunity to avoid impact to people on the ground while improving chances for debris recovery. There are no indications of any civilians hurt or otherwise affected," Lt. Col. César Santiago said in a statement.

It was the third time in as many days and the fourth overall since Feb. 4 that an "unidentified object" was shot down in North America.

Rep. Jack Bergman, R-Mich., confirmed that the "U.S. military has decommissioned another ‘object’ over Lake Huron."

Rep. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., tweeted that the object had been "downed" by Air Force and National Guard pilots.

"Great work by all who carried out this mission both in the air and back at headquarters. We're all interested in exactly what this object was and its purpose," Slotkin tweeted. "As long as these things keep traversing the US and Canada, I'll continue to ask Congress to get a full briefing based on our exploitation of the wreckage."

COMMENT:  All very strange.  Is something being held back from us, or is it really true that we have no idea where these craft came from?  Are we monitoring the skies above China and Russia, with an eye toward detecting these objects sooner?

Most important, what is the goal of the people, whoever they are, in sending these strange objects over our territory?

I just have the gut feeling that someone in Washington knows a great deal, but can't reveal it openly.

We await the next confrontation.
