THE DISGRACE – OVERNIGHT: All news desks were cleared as soon as it happened.  The Politico, generally an online publication of the left, published Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito's private draft of a proposed Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade.

It had never happened before.  In all the history of our Supreme Court there has never been a leak of a proposed ruling. The leak is an insult to all Americans who believe the Court must operate to the highest judicial standards, and not be simply a political football.

It was clear from the leak that the Court, as of now, intends to overturn Roe, the famous (or infamous) 1973 decision making abortion legal throughout the United States.  Drafts, however, are subject to review, rewriting, and rethinking. The secrecy of the draft process protects the Court from mob rule and even threats to the justices.  Respect for that process has been sacrosanct...until tonight.

Clearly, the leak is an operation of the left, an attempt to create mob action against the proposed ruling, perhaps hoping that one justice would be frightened enough to reverse his or her stand, thus leaving Roe in place. And, of course, we immediately saw, after the Politico story, demonstrators appearing at the Supreme Court building to scream in protest.  And we heard the usual suspects at MSNBC and CNN going berserk, predicting the end of civilization as we know it.  All of The New York Times is on a suicide watch.

Of course, there is speculation over the identity of the leaker.  The individual should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.  At least that's what rational people think.  But the criminal is already being hailed as a hero or heroine in leftist circles, a brave soul, the ultimate whistleblower. I wouldn't be surprised if the little star got a ticker tape parade down Broadway.

But who is the leaker? And this should be read as speculation.  The general feeling on the part of sources I trust is that the leaker is clearly on the left, and is either a clerk of one of the justices, or...incredibly, a justice.   Great movie, right?  Only justices and their law clerks have access to drafts of opinions.

There are three liberal justices – Justices Stephen Breyer, Elena Kagan, and Sonia Sotomayor.  Recently confirmed Ketanji Brown Jackson will join the Court upon Justice Breyer's retirement.  Could the culprit be a clerk for one of these three liberals?

Some authorities say it's unlikely that a clerk is guilty.  They argue that clerks are young, at the start of their professional lives, and would know that, if caught, their legal careers would be over.

A justice? Could it be?

Most of the speculation I've read tonight surrounds Justice Sonia Sotomayor.  She is known to be a rebel, and has chastised the Court on many occasions. She also has a considerable ego, referring to herself as a "wise Latina" during her confirmation hearings. And she is a militant liberal.

No one believes retiring Justice Breyer would do such a thing.  He is a picture of propriety.  Ditto Justice Kagan.  No, the name Sotomayor is being floated.

Again, speculation, but I thought you'd be intrigued.  We may learn more today.  I'll be following the story.  This is a big one, with implications for the November election.  But we can't be sure what those implications will turn out to be.

SHORT TAKES ON THE DRIFTING WRECKAGE - OVERNIGHT:

GREAT START – FROM TOWNHALL:   Earlier this week, the State Government Leadership Foundation (SGLF) launched its six-figure "Tale of Two Americas" ad campaign to highlight the stunning contrast between how states run by Republican leaders and those run by Democrats fare when it comes to issues such as economic opportunity, academic achievement, and safety in their communities: "Our country is a tale of two Americas. We have opportunity or hardship. Education or indoctrination. Rule of law or lawlessness. Strength or weakness. Liberal failures are hurting Americans. Conservative ideas are moving us forward. Which America do you want to live in? pic.twitter.com/vshGRyvsj2— State Government Leadership Foundation (SGLF) (@theSGLF)" That's the spirit. Exactly the right message. Always do contrasts. Their way versus our way. And I hope our side gives price contrasts: "Price of gas, $4.50 a gallon; Trump price, $2.79." That'll get 'em.

THE BEASTS OF THE LAST FEW YEARS ARE COMING BACK - OVERNIGHT, FROM FOX:

The resource-strapped Portland Police Bureau (PPB) reportedly took more than 20 minutes to respond when alleged Antifa members assaulted a Saturday campaign event near police headquarters in downtown Portland.

By the time officers had "sufficient resources" to establish a crime scene near Southwest 3rd and Main Street, the black-clad demonstrators had already dispersed after hurling smoke grenades, paint-filled balloons and fireworks, according to police. Two were injured by "mortars," police said.

The protesters' violence cut short the event in support of Republican gubernatorial candidate Stan Pulliam, whose platform includes refunding the police.

"This is what happens when a Republican dares to hold an event in Portland to talk about funding our police. Antifa shows up," Pulliam tweeted along with footage of the incident.

Pulliam also claimed the "underfunded police didn't show in time to allow our free speech."

Speaking to media after the incident, Pulliam said what he and his supporters experienced is what "neighbors throughout the Portland community have to experience on almost a daily basis."

"We called the police, we called 911," he said. "In fact, at the Justice of Peace Center, we were just outside of their headquarters, sat on hold for over 20 minutes. No police officers ever arrive until the very end, just to take our statement."

Pulliam contrasted when Portland had 30 officers per 100,000 people in the 1970s to the present-day ratio of eight per 100,000.

"And then we wonder why we have all the violence and destruction happening on our streets," he added.

A statement from the PPB confirmed that while a sergeant began monitoring the situation and gathering available resources, there "were only a few officers available in the precinct."
The incident came the same day PPB released a separate statement describing Friday night into Saturday as "an extraordinarily busy evening of significant events" that strained their resources. The night included five shootings, three serious crashes and one stolen ambulance within a 12-hour span.

COMMENT: The sad fact is that too many Americans, especially "sophisticates" in large cities, have gotten used to this scandal and see it as a bump in the road toward "equity."  It's not.  It's exactly what it appears to be – organized destruction and fascism pretending to be "progressive."

Americans will have a chance to take on some of the Portlands in the November election. Common sense may actually prevail.

"The left needs two things to survive. It needs mediocrity, and it needs dependence. It nurtures mediocrity in the public schools and the universities. It nurtures dependence through its empire of government programs. A nation that embraces mediocrity and dependence betrays itself, and can only fade away, wondering all the time what might have been."
