SHORT TAKES ON THE DRIFTING WRECKAGE – OVERNIGHT:

DUMB IT DOWN!  DUMB IT DOWN! – FROM DAILYWIRE:   Oregon may stop requiring lawyers to pass the state’s bar exam after new data showed dramatic racial disparities in bar exam results.  Instead of studying for the notoriously grueling two-day bar exam, those hoping to practice law in Oregon may soon be given two alternative routes to becoming licensed in the state.  A task force of the Oregon Board of Bar Examiners recommended in two recent task force reports that potential attorneys be allowed to either take the exam or be admitted to the profession on the merits of coursework and practical experience.  The idea is to provide a pathway to licensing for people who do not have the time or resources to prepare for the bar exam. Some proponents of the alternatives also say it will lead to attorneys being better prepared when they do begin practicing.  The recommendations come after more than 1,000 new lawyers became licensed over the past year without taking a bar exam, thanks to emergency pandemic programs in Utah, Washington, Oregon, Louisiana, and Washington, D.C.  Just what you need if you or your grown child is wrongly accused of committing a crime – a lawyer who didn't pass the bar.  You might also find out if he didn't pass English.

PLAYING WITH FIRE – FROM THE WASHINGTON TIMES:   The top Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee accused Democrats on Sunday of “playing with fire” in refusing to back a thorough probe into China’s role in the outbreak of the COVID19 pandemic.  Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas said on “Fox News Sunday” that further scrutiny was required into the origins of the pandemic that has killed more than 600,000 Americans.  To date, Democratic congressional leaders have refused to back a widespread investigation into whether China played any role in the outbreak.  “I wish the Democrats would join with us on this very important investigation [into] what caused the problem,” Mr. McCaul said. “They’re playing a dangerous game … they’re playing with fire and that fire really lit up the world and burned. We need to get to the truth of the matter.”  The Democrats don't care.  They don't see China as an enemy because they don't see Communism as an enemy.  Once the party of national defense, but no more.

DEMS PANIC ON CRIME – 11:41 P.M. ET:  The Democratic Party seems finally to be "woke" in a different direction, recognizing what crazy crime policies are doing to its chances in upcoming elections.  From Michael Goodwin at Fox:

Breaking news alert: National Democrats are suddenly worried about the rise of violent crime. We know this because they’re blaming the bloodshed on Republicans.

The previous strategy, meaning before Monday, was a mix of denial and excuse-making, but it wasn’t working. How could it when thousands of people are getting shot and murdered, mostly in cities run by Democrats?

Something had to give, and White House press secretary Jen Psaki tipped the new strategy when she concocted the notion that it’s Republicans who actually support defunding the police. Her fatuous attempt to flip reality on its head relied on GOP resistance to another multitrillion-dollar Biden administration boondoggle. A boondoggle, by the way, that has nothing to do with police or crime.

Nonetheless, desperate times call for desperate measures and so Psaki was making like Lady Macbeth in trying to wipe the blood off Dems’ hands.

The effort won’t wash, but the attempt is telling. Polling everywhere reflects growing public angst, but my guess is the lightning-bolt moment came with the first-place finish of Eric Adams in the first round of New York’s Democratic mayoral primary.

Adams, a retired NYPD captain and the Brooklyn borough president, was the lone candidate to make combating crime his top issue, as did voters. It’s a beautiful thing when politics works like it’s supposed to.

The other seven Dems acted like the Seven Dwarfs in not pivoting to the issue even as the body count climbed, with children and tourists among the casualties. The others continued to parrot the left’s talking points about climate change, systemic racism and free everything for everybody except the wealthy, who must finally pay their fair share. Blah, blah, blah.

We can only imagine the way Adams’s victory was received in Dems’ back rooms: Holy s–t, did you see what just happened in New York? Quick, say something!

So the party that featured police haters and people who see racism behind every badge last year is suddenly sweating bullets. That’s how fast the momentum is shifting.

Give Adams credit – he understood immediately what was happening. On election night, he crowed that "I am the face of the Democratic Party" and warned that if leaders fail "to recognize what we did here in New York City, they’re going to have a problem in the midterm elections and they’re going to have a problem in the presidential election."

His argument cuts to the core of voting blocs. Blue cities and states are blue primarily because blacks and Latinos vote overwhelmingly for Dems.

Yet here, those same voters chose Adams in big numbers and cited growing crime in their neighborhoods as the reason. They don’t want less policing – they want more and better policing.

Brima Sylla, a teacher and general secretary of the African Community Alliance of Staten Island, gave The Post her view of Adams: "He’s not there to defund the police. He’s there because he was part of the police system … He knows how to structure it in a better way."

COMMENT:  All true, but the hard left of the party shows no sign of compromising its ideology.  While it doesn't yet have a majority of Democrats nationwide, it has enough clout to make the difference in close primaries.

Ideologists would rather lose and disrupt the society than win and improve it.

SHORT TAKES ON THE DRIFTING WRECKAGE – OVERNIGHT:

NEW YORK'S AGONY CONTINUES – FROM THE NEW YORK POST:   Hate crime in the city is way up, skyrocketing by 139 percent this year, NYPD data show.  Cops say they’ve investigated 320 reports of possible bias attacks through June 27, up from 134 incidents during the same period in 2020.  Offenses against Asians surged by 400 percent, to 105 reported cases this year from 21 last year.  Anti-Semitic assaults went up 69 percent, to 113 incidents this year from 67 last year.  The NYPD reported 28 attacks on Blacks this year, nearly double last year’s 15.  There were also 11 hate crimes against whites, an increase from four in 2020; five incidents involving Muslims, up from two last year; and four offenses against Hispanics after none last year, the data shows.  In addition, the NYPD reported 31 hate crimes motivated by sexual orientation this year versus nine last year, a 244 percent increase.  This year’s tally includes 13 cases motivated by gender, four by ethnicity and six by religion, cops said.  “There’s no law and order anymore,” said a 26-year-old Upper West Side woman, who told The Post she and a group of fellow Jewish students were targeted outside Central Park on June 12.  The woman said she suffered a concussion after unidentified masked thugs hurled eggs at her group — “three modestly dressed women” and “three young men with yarmulkes” — at 92nd Street and Central Park West around 8:30 p.m.  “We were walking, everything was fine. We turned onto 92nd and right under the scaffolding of this building [at 322 Central Park West], I just felt like a rock hit the back of my head.  Six years ago, New York was the safest large city in America.  Look what's happening to it.  And, in the midst of a mayoral campaign, no one seems to have any answers.  I often urge people to leave New York and move to the exciting and vibrant smaller cities of the heartland.  Many seem to be doing just that.

POISON ON OUR COUNTRY'S BIRTHDAY – OVERNIGHT:  Most Americans appear to have celebrated Independence Day in our traditional, peaceful and happy way.  With the Covid 19 virus fading, we've begun to resume our normal lives.

Sadly, some "Americans" reserved their special vitriol for this day, describing a nation that no rational person recognizes.  As usual, the liberal press refuses to call them out, as if freedom of speech guarantees freedom from criticism.  What worries me is the severe heat of the words being used.   They are getting hotter by the week, and words can kill.  From Fox:

One Democratic lawmaker and several left-wing used the Fourth of July to share controversial statements or disparage the founding of the United States.

Democrat Rep. Cori Bush, D-Mo, tweeted out "When they say that the 4th of July is about American freedom, remember this: the freedom they’re referring to is for white people. This land is stolen land and Black people still aren’t free."

There were some who agreed with Bush's comments like congressional candidate Shahid Buttar. He replied to her tweet saying "Speak it, @CoriBush! It’s almost as if our entire country has been brainwashed to ignore our history—and how its worst elements continue today—despite our self-congratulatory rhetoric."

Former MSNBC anchor Toure was far more vocal, tweeting out "F--k Independence Day. Not only were we not free, the whole reason the Colonies wanted independence was because Britain was moving toward abolishing slavery. Why would Black people celebrate a day so wrapped up in our enslavement?"

He also tweeted out his own opinion piece for the website The Grio titled "F--k Fourth of July: The only independence day I recognize is Juneteenth."

Actress Alyssa Milano also disparaged the Fourth of July by sharing a TikTok video of herself reading "Reminder: The United States was founded on the unjust treatment of Native Americans, Africans and other people of color."

News organizations also took the opportunity to use the holiday to criticize the United States and its history.

NPR tweeted out a thread of the original Declaration of Independence, claiming it to be "a document with flaws and deeply ingrained hypocrisies." It also remarked immediately that the document "says ‘that all men are created equal’ — but women, enslaved people, Indigenous people and many others were not held as equal at the time."

The Washington Post went even further by posting several opinion pieces that critique the holiday or use it for political partisanship. These pieces included "The Fourth is for complainers," "Independence Day 2021 is an apt occasion to celebrate America’s liberation from Trump," and a perspective piece titled "July Fourth is Independence Day for two countries. But for one it is hollow."

This followed the New York Times opinion piece that suggested the American flag became a symbol of divisiveness. In the article titled "A Fourth of July Symbol of Unity That May No Longer Unite."

COMMENT:  It is not a sin to be ignorant.  It's a sin to be ignorant and not do anything about it.  So we have here a lot of sinners, with no hope for any of them.

The problem is, this stuff is being shoved into the brains of our children by those who've taken over whole school systems.  And, judging by the number of young people who say in polls that they're not proud to be Americans, the madness is having effect.  Other nations watch this, and some probably believe that we are growing increasingly divided and weak.  This can easily lead to a catastrophic miscalculation that melts into a major war, with mass casualties.  Words have consequences

"The left needs two things to survive. It needs mediocrity, and it needs dependence. It nurtures mediocrity in the public schools and the universities. It nurtures dependence through its empire of government programs. A nation that embraces mediocrity and dependence betrays itself, and can only fade away, wondering all the time what might have been."
