SHORT TAKES ON THE DRIFTING WRECKAGE – OVERNIGHT:

ADAMS IN ACTION – FROM THE NEW YORK POST:   New York City Mayor Eric Adams on Monday knocked the NYPD for failing to conduct a “thorough investigation” into the alleged assault he called 911 about on his first day on the job.  Criticism from the retired NYPD captain-turned-politician comes two days after he reported three men fighting each other in Brooklyn. Police responded but left without questioning anyone.  “I think that what happened there, it is crucial that we use that interaction as a teaching moment. The officers, I believe, should have stopped, carried out a more thorough investigation, interview people at the scene. I don’t believe they did that properly,” Adams said on PIX 11, when asked if he was “happy” with the officers’ response.  “We should instruct how we want these jobs handled, and how we want them to come to a proper resolution,” he said. “And I’m going to look at that and make sure we instruct the officers on what my expectations are.”    He's also said, very strongly, that, unlike the mayor he just replaced, he will have his officers' backs.  He will support them, but he'll insist on high standards.  Hey, we may just have an effective mayor here.  Clearly, it will take a long time to evaluate him, and we won't always agree with him.  But he has a clarity that we haven't seen for some time in City Hall.

ANOTHER EDUCATIONAL ADVANCE – FROM COLLEGE FIX:  Administrators at the University of Reading in England recently cut several lines referring to domestic violence from a classic Greek poem to avoid offending students.  The 2,000-year-old poem, Types of Women, by Semonides of Amorgos, is taught to first-year classics students at the school and makes reference to silencing women through violence.  Documents obtained by The UK Daily Mail include a statement by school administrators:  “The portion of the poem now omitted involved a brief reference to domestic violence,” read the statement. “That portion has subsequently been removed because, while the text as a whole is vitriolic, that part seemed unnecessarily unpleasant and (potentially) triggering.”  According to the school, no student had complained about the poem.  “This is beyond naive,” Jeremy Black, emeritus professor of history at the University of Exeter, told the Daily Mail. “It is positively ridiculous and has no place in academia.”   Black is certainly right.  There are some signs of a growing resistance to the know-nothing wokeism that has taken over many schools.  The question is whether the resistance has come too late.  Congress has a role to play in withholding federal aid to schools that succumb to the trends of the moment, but Congress will only act if Republicans are in control.  That's our job come November.

BYE BYE, BLUE BOYS – OVERNIGHT:  The strong trend continues, although many "journalists" won't examine it – Americans are leaving red states in droves.  From the New York Post:

Droves of residents fled Democrat-run states with surging crime and COVID-19 restrictions last year — with New York, New Jersey and Connecticut among the five that suffered the steepest losses, a sobering new survey shows.

New Jersey led the nation with 70 percent of the people involved in moves fleeing the Garden State, compared to just 30 percent who migrated in, according to United Van Lines’ 45th Annual National Movers Study.

Illinois — home to crime- and shooting-ridden Chicago — came in second with 67 percent of the moves recorded were of residents leaving the state, while just 27 percent were in-bound.

New York ranked third, with 63 percent of movers headed for the exits and 37 percent settling in.
Nearly 30 percent those who fled the Empire State said “family” was a primary factor in their decisions, with about 12 percent citing “cost.”

The survey also showed that the exodus largely involved the wealthy, with those making $150,000 or more comprising 45.3 percent of the total.

It’s unclear when those moves took place, but in April the state adopted a record $212 billion budget that targeted big earners with new taxes that rise as high as 10.9 percent.

Meanwhile, six of the top 10 metro areas suffering from the worst exodus were in the New York-New Jersey region.

And...

California — long a driver of population growth — was fifth-worst for movers heading for the exits, with 59 percent fleeing the state while only 41 percent of newcomers moved in.

All five states with the highest outbound rates have a few things in common: they are run by Democrats, are high-taxed and suffer from spikes in crime.

COMMENT:  Read the rest.  Very good information.  Frankly, I'm not shocked.   Democratic policies have hit rock bottom.  And the Democratic Party, increasingly elitist and racialized, seems less popular than the Covid 19 virus.   I don't know how they do it, but the Dems seem to have chosen, for their themes, some of the most disliked ideas in the record books – winners like defunding the police and teaching critical race theory in the schools.  And at times their leadership appears older than the country.

Roosevelt, Truman and Kennedy, wherever they are, are probably disgusted.  And none of them could get into the Democratic Party today.

SHORT TAKES ON THE DRIFTING WRECKAGE – OVERNIGHT:

COURAGE – OVERNIGHT:  FROM COLLEGE FIX –  USA Swimming veteran official Cynthia Millen resigned after more than 30 years at the organization to protest the inclusion of “biological male” swimmers who compete against females.  Lia Thomas, the University of Pennsylvania transgender swimmer who is smashing women’s records after competing for two full seasons as a man, is “a biological male who is competing against women,” Millen said. Thomas took testosterone suppressants and has been cleared by the NCAA to compete against women.  “The fact is that swimming is a sport in which bodies compete against bodies. Identities do not compete against identities,” Millen said December 28 on Fox News. “Men are different from women, men swimmers are different from women, and they will always be faster than women.”  Millen said that dividing swimmers by sex as well as age group is a well-established practice that begins when competitiors are chldren:  “USA Swimming recognizes that boys swim differently from girls, and this is accentuated when boys and girls go through puberty,” Millen said.  “[N]o matter how many testosterone-suppressing drugs he takes, he will always be a biological male,” Millen said, in reference to Thomas.  Good for her.  The feminist groups have sold out women's sports, favoring instead the trendiness of the trans movement.  At least there are a few women standing up for justice.

YOU'D THINK THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN BROUGHT UP EARLIER – OVERNIGHT:  Everyone by now has heard of 5G, the new ultra-fast communications platform already built into the latest cell phones.  It's about to burst upon the scene.  Or maybe it's just gonna burst.  Seems there are problems, but I don't see anyone in the national administration noticing.  Remember, it's Trump's fault.  From the New York Post:

Airline executives are sounding louder alarms about the impending rollout of 5G service, warning that the cellphone frequencies could lead to 350,000 delays each year by jamming their in-flight systems.

The ultra-fast so-called C-Band service is set to roll out nationally in big cities on Jan. 5, meaning any rules to limit its strength to address airline safety concerns need to happen soon.

Southwest Airlines CEO Greg Kelly has said 5G is his company’s “No. 1 concern” and an industry group said the new ultra-fast cellphone service could lead to more than $2 billion in flight delays each year.

Airlines are warning of widespread flight cancellations and delays. They say 5G signals will interfere with sensitive aircraft safety systems — which operate near the same frequencies — and could disrupt their ability to land safely during storms, cloudy weather or smog.

If the cell service is deployed as planned, hundreds of thousands of passengers could see their flights delayed, diverted or outright cancelled in 2022, United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said in a Senate hearing last week.

“It would be a catastrophic failure of government,” Kirby said, predicting that the 5G rollout would affect about 4 percent of all flights.

Government?  Government?  Haven't they heard that this administration can't do aviation and Covid masks at the same time?  What do you want, efficiency?

Both executives called on AT&T and Verizon to delay the implementation of 5G C-Band service, warning of maddening delays for passengers and financial losses for an industry that’s been battered by the pandemic.

Regulators from the Federal Aviation Administration are analyzing cell tower and aircraft data to determine how to address the issue, The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday. About a week before C-Band service is rolled out on Jan. 5, the FAA is expected send out warnings to pilots about which airports will see 5G-related restrictions, according to the paper.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel of the Federal Communications Commission, which regulates 5G frequencies, have reportedly clashed over the issue.

COMMENT:  Read the rest.  Buttigieg is considered a Democratic presidential prospect.  This could be his first chance for a truly dramatic failure, something apparently respected in the Democratic Party.   At the same time he could declare airlines and 5G a threat to the environment.  Oh, the lefties in L.A. and Manhattan will love that, as long as their private jets aren't grounded.

Oh, by the way, you'll notice that airlines are already cancelling hundreds of flights a day because they are short of aircrews and hit with the virus.  Just add this problem.  Fascinating week coming up.  Watch Kamala Harris swing into action.

"The left needs two things to survive. It needs mediocrity, and it needs dependence. It nurtures mediocrity in the public schools and the universities. It nurtures dependence through its empire of government programs. A nation that embraces mediocrity and dependence betrays itself, and can only fade away, wondering all the time what might have been."
