SHORT TAKES ON THE DRIFTING WRECKAGE – OVERNIGHT:

REAL SMALL-TIMER – FROM WBAP:   New York City will terminate business contracts with President Donald Trump after last week’s insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Wednesday.  The Trump Organization is under city contract to operate the two ice rinks and a carousel in Central Park as well as a golf course in the Bronx.  The Trump Organization profits about $17 million a year from those sites, de Blasio said.  “I’m here to announce that the city of New York is severing all contracts with the Trump Organization,” de Blasio said.  It is the latest example of how the Jan. 6 breach after a Trump rally is affecting the Republican president’s business interests.  The small-timers are at work, getting in their kicks at the president.  Bill de Blasio is one of the smallest of them all, and an absolutely horrible mayor.  I guess this is as brilliant as he gets.

HER AGAIN – FROM THE WASHINGTON TIMES:   President-elect Joseph R. Biden on Wednesday named Samantha Power, the former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations during the Obama administration, as his pick to lead the U.S. Agency for International Development.  Mr. Biden also elevated the position to be in the National Security Council (NSC).  “As USAID Administrator, Ambassador Power will be a powerful force for lifting up the vulnerable, ushering in a new era of human progress and development, and advancing American interests globally,” Mr. Biden said.  Before she served as U.N. ambassador from 2013-2017, Ms. Power was on the NSC staff from 2009-2013 as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights.  Another recruit from the failed foreign policy of the Obama administration.  We'll have a kind of shadow government, where the shadow of Barack will be seen in every hallway.

ABSOLUTELY CHILLING – OVERNIGHT:  The socialists in Congress are getting ready for their "To Moscow with Love" show.  I want no part of it.  From the New York Post:

WASHINGTON — Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez revealed that Congress is looking into creating an investigative commission to “rein in” the media in the wake of the US Capitol siege.

During a lengthy Instagram Live on Tuesday evening where she revealed that she feared for her life during the siege, the “Squad” member accused the mainstream media of “spewing disinformation” ahead of the deadly riot which killed five people.

“There’s absolutely a commission that’s being discussed but it seems to be more investigating in style rather than truth and reconciliation,” she said.

“I do think that several members of Congress in some of my discussions have brought up media literacy because that is part of what happened here,” she went on.

“We’re going to have to figure out how we rein in our media environment so you can’t just spew disinformation and misinformation,” she said.

“It’s one thing to have differentiating opinions, but it’s another thing entirely to just say things that are false so that’s something that we’re looking into.”

COMMENT:  The language of a budding totalitarian.  We don't need the government to tell us what to think.  In the immortal words of Sam Goldwyn,  "Include me out."

MAKING A JOKE OF THE CONSTITUTION – AT 5:20 P.M. ET:  So President Trump becomes the only president in American history to be impeached twice.  I hope the American people are watching their elected representatives make fools of themselves.  From Fox:

The House of Representatives Wednesday made history by voting to impeach President Trump for a second time for "incitement of insurrection" after a mob of his supporters besieged the Capitol on Jan. 6 in a failed attempt to stop the certification of President-elect Joe Biden's electoral college win.

Poor journalism there.  Not all of the rioters were Trump supporters.  Indeed, they may have been a minority.

The House voted 232-197 to impeach the president. Ten Republicans joined with Democrats.
Trump has just one week left in office, but the supporters of the impeachment push say Trump is too dangerous to stay in office a minute longer. The impeachment resolution condemns Trump for spreading lies that he won the election in a landslide and whipping up a crowd of supporters in Washington D.C. before the riot that killed five people, including a Capitol Police officer.

"The bottom line is this: This Capitol was stormed. People died because of the big lies that were being told by this president, and by too many people on the other side of the aisle. Enough," said Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass., in a floor speech before the vote. "People should be outraged as to what happened. It was unforgivable, unconscionable.

"The president of the United States instigated an attempted coup in this country," McGovern continued. "People died. Everybody should be outraged. Whether you're a Democrat or Republican. If this is not an impeachable offense. I don't know what the hell is. This president is not fit to remain in office."

What a circus.  Most Americans probably know that the House cannot remove a president.  It can send a bill of impeachment to the Senate, where the president is tried.  But Mitch McConnell has already ruled out any trial before President Trump leaves office a week from today.

Unlike the last House impeachment of Trump in December 2019 for soliciting foreign interference in the presidential election, Democrats had GOP support. Rep. Liz Cheney, the No. 3 House Republican, backed impeachment because she said the violent attack at the Capitol could not have happened without Trump.

"The president of the United States summoned this mob, assembled the mob, and lit the flame of this attack," said Cheney, who is from Wyoming. "Everything that followed was his doing."

Joining Cheney in support of impeachment were GOP Reps. Dan Newhouse of Washington, Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, Fred Upton of Michigan, Jaime Herrera Beutler of Washington, John Katko of New York, Anthony Gonzalez of Ohio, Tom Rice of South Carolina, David Valadao of California and Peter Meijer of Michigan.

COMMENT:  It would have been nice if some of the solemn, self-righteous members of the House, on the Democratic side, had vigorously condemned the violence we saw all summer long in Democratic-controlled cities.  But I guess they had shopping to do.

Now the question is whether the Senate can try a president who is no longer in office.  CNN will be holding a prayer session tonight to pray that it can.  CNN needs Trump, even after he leaves the White House.  What else have they got?

SHORT TAKES ON THE DRIFTING WRECKAGE – OVERNIGHT:

TRUE? – FROM RASMUSSEN:    The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll, Sponsored by SLANTED from Sharyl Attkisson, for Monday shows that 49% of Likely U.S. Voters approve of President Trump’s job performance. Fifty-one percent (50%) disapprove.  The latest figures include 36% who Strongly Approve of the job Trump is doing and 40% who Strongly Disapprove. This gives him a Presidential Approval Index rating of -4.   These figures may appear out of whack with other polls, and may be, but Rasmussen has a good record of accuracy.  It's possible, and this is speculation, that Trump could be benefiting from a sympathy vote.

BACK AGAIN ON THE BESTSELLER LIST – FROM DAILYWIRE:   “Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.” — GEORGE ORWELL, “1984”

Twitter has banned President Donald Trump. Google, Amazon, and Apple shut down Parler, a conservative social media site. No one knows what’s true or false anymore. And the language police are running rampant, with lawmakers on Capitol Hill going so far as to ban words like “father, mother, son, daughter, brother, sister.”  So, it makes perfect sense that Orwell’s famous book “1984” is once again the best-selling book on Amazon.  Orwell, whose real name was Eric Arthur Blair, wrote the book in 1949, his last completed novel before his death.  An opponent of totalitarianism, Orwell served in the Loyalist forces in the Spanish Civil War. And as fascism began to sweep the world, he was inspired to write a novel about what would happen should it win.  Orwell is coming true.  So is Ronald Reagan, when he warned us that "freedom is a fragile thing and is never more than one generation away from extinction. It is not ours by inheritance; it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation, for it comes only once to a people.  Those who have known freedom and then lost it have never known it again."

ONE DOWN – OVERNIGHT:  PBS has discarded a nut case who was caught on tape making vile comments.  One small step for man.  From Daily Caller:

PBS is distancing itself from a former employee featured in a Project Veritas video who appeared to defend violent attacks on the White House, proposed re-education for the children of President Donald Trump supporters, and praised the COVID-19 deaths of GOP voters.

“This employee no longer works for PBS,” a PBS spokesperson told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “As a mid-level staff attorney, he did not speak on behalf of our organization, nor did he make any editorial decisions.”

“There is no place for hateful rhetoric at PBS, and this individual’s views in no way reflect our values or opinions,” the spokesperson said. “We strongly condemn violence and will continue to do what we have done for 50 years — use our national platform and local presence to strengthen communities and bring people together.”

PBS did not clarify to the DCNF whether the employee was fired as a result of the video. Project Veritas tweeted Tuesday afternoon that former PBS principal counsel Michael Beller had been fired.

COMMENT:  It's hard to think of much good coming out of the current orgy in Washington, but there is some outside possibility that the left will realize it will be more closely scrutinized and may not be able to get away with its usual disgraceful behavior.  That is a wish.

THE FLOOD – AT 8:16 P.M. ET:  Look, we're flooded with news, or what passes for news.  We are inundated with comments, many from half-brained politicians, analyzed for us by quarter-brained journalists.  I spend most of my time reading, just to keep up, and give the impression to you, our readers, that I actually know what I'm writing about.  Sometimes I do.

You know what's going on.  You keep up.  So I thought I would just give you this.  Frankly, I think it's the most interesting story of the day.  From Fox:

CNN announced Tuesday that it would pull the plug on its long-running Airport Network, causing jubilation among many of the network's critics on social media.

Network President Jeff Zucker announced the CNN Airport Network will officially end on March 31, citing a "deep decline in airport traffic because of COVID-19, coupled with all the new ways that people are consuming content on their personal devices."

"Having to say goodbye to such a beloved brand is not easy," Zucker wrote. "I want to thank our friends and colleagues who have contributed to its success and to celebrate the fact that for 30 years, the CNN Airport Network has kept millions of domestic travelers informed. It has also become an iconic part of the traveling experience in this country."

Oh really?

For years, CNN critics mocked the anti-Trump network for heavily relying on airport travelers for its viewership, which had cratered for much of the Trump presidency.

"Best. news. EVER," NewsBusters managing editor Curtis Houck declared on Twitter.

"Wtf I love COVID now ..." Spectator USA editor Amber Athey joked.

"2021 is looking up already," Daily Wire senior editor Emily Zanotti wrote.

"CNN has just forfeited 95 percent of its viewership," conservative commentator Matt Walsh quipped.

COMMENT:  I am immediately moving to an airport.  I can live on those airport benches.  I've spent hours on them.  As long as they keep the food concessions open, I'll be happy.

Free of CNN, free of CNN!  Thank God, Almighty, I'm free of CNN!

"The left needs two things to survive. It needs mediocrity, and it needs dependence. It nurtures mediocrity in the public schools and the universities. It nurtures dependence through its empire of government programs. A nation that embraces mediocrity and dependence betrays itself, and can only fade away, wondering all the time what might have been."
