SHORT TAKES ON THE DRIFTING WRECKAGE – OVERNIGHT:

HARRIS CONTINUES TO SHRINK – OVERNIGHT:  The vice president is suffering still more resignations from her staff.  Tells us all we need to know about her management skills.  From Fox:   Vice President Kamala Harris continues to lose staff with the departure of yet another high-ranking member of her team.  Kate Childs Graham, Harris's chief speechwriter, is leaving the vice president's office at the end of the month, sources told Fox News.  A White House official told Fox News, "Kate is leaving the office, but not the family. The vice president is grateful for her service to the administration."  "We are excited for her next step," the official added.  This is far from the first resignation for the vice president's team. The office has seen a virtual exodus over the course of her first year in office as staffers complain about their workplace morale.  That low morale was created by Harris herself.  She is famously cruel to her staff.  She is not a leader.  She is not an intellect.  She is not a builder of coalitions.  And she is one frail heartbeat away from the presidency.

A RECOMMENDATION:  I don't recommend books or movies very often, but I was recently sent a book that I can heartily recommend.  It is called "Secret War," by Captain Albert Schwartz, US Navy, retired.  Captain Schwartz was a submariner, and commanded the Ohio class missile submarine USS Michigan.  His book is a good yarn, but, much more important, it will tell you more about submarines, and the crews who man them, than any recent novel that I know.  If you have an interest in military affairs, and especially naval affairs, "Secret War" will be your guide and your reference tool.  Don't miss it.  It can be ordered for Kindle at

FREE AT LAST, FREE AT LAST!  EVEN THE LIBERALS ARE STARTING TO SURRENDER ON MASK MANDATES – OVERNIGHT:  Some people in very left places are starting to read the polls.  From Daily Mail: 

The governors of four states announced plans Monday to lift statewide mask requirements in schools by the end of February or March, citing the rapid easing of COVID-19´s omicron surge.

The decisions in Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey and Oregon were announced as state and local governments grapple with which virus restrictions to jettison and which ones to keep in place. The changes also come amid a growing sense that the virus is never going to go away and Americans need to find a way to coexist with it.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy called the move 'a huge step back to normalcy for our kids' and said individual school districts will be free to continue requiring masks after the state mandate ends March 7.

Meanwhile, California announced plans to end its indoor masking requirement for vaccinated people next week, but masks will still be the rule for schoolchildren in the nation's most populous state.

The four states are among a dozen with mask mandates in schools, according to the nonpartisan National Academy for State Health Policy. New Jersey´s requirement has been in place since classes resumed in person in September 2020.

Murphy cited the 'dramatic decline in our COVID numbers' in announcing the rollback. The omicron variant fueled a spike in infections over the holidays, but cases in the state are down 50% and hospitalizations dropped off by one-third since last week, he said.

COMMENT:  Yeah, yeah, yeah.  They're following the science.  Right.  What they're actually following is the polls, which have turned dramatically against their Democratic Party.  But, these days, when you're losing and switch policies, just say you're following the science.   It sounds so good, and you might convince some people that you're smart.

I AM THE STATE!  WELL, SHE THINKS SHE IS.  ALEXANDRIA OCASIO-CORTEZ, OTHERWISE KNOWN AS AOC, IS MAKING MAJOR POLITICAL NOISE, ESSENTIALLY DEMANDING HER ROLE AS MOTHER, OR KID SISTER, OF THE NEW RADICAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY.  I THINK SHE BELIEVES THIS STUFF.  OVERNIGHT,  FROM FOX:

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., announced a rally in Texas to support two candidates in next month's Democratic primary.

"Texans, are you ready?" Ocasio-Cortez said on Twitter. "We’re coming in for a major DOUBLE-RALLY next Saturday, Feb 12th… This one’s going to be special."

I wonder if they've ever heard of her.

Ocasio-Cortez will rally in support of Greg Casar, who the New York Democrat officially endorsed last week.

"Because of his roots as a labor organizer, I know Greg and I will work together to organize year-round and deliver on Medicare for All, good jobs, and climate justice," Ocasio-Cortez said at the time. "I’m proud to support his campaign and will be doing everything I can to help him win this primary on March 1."

Everyone is excited about "climate justice."  I hear people talk in restaurants.

The rally will also support Jessica Cisneros, who is looking to unseat incumbent Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Texas, in Texas' 28th Congressional District.

Cuellar previously bested Cisneros by four points in the 2020 primary, but now faces controversy after his home was raided by FBI agents last month.

The FBI has not charged the lawmaker with a crime, but Cisneros has called the investigation "alarming" and boasted that Ocasio-Cortez is "ready to work alongside us to finally bring true representation to South Texas families."

And get this for ego:

Ocasio-Cortez has previously criticized her fellow Democrats for not using her or other progressives on the campaign trail, saying the party made a "mistake" by being too moderate during the Virginia gubernatorial race that Republican Glenn Youngkin won last November.

Yes, Virginia was hoping for Jane Fonda.

"Before the Virginia elections, it was very clear that our help and our participation was not wanted or asked for, which is fine. I’m not here to tell people how to run their races," Ocasio-Cortez said at the time. "But at the same time, to consider the members here that have some of the tightest relationships to our political base as just a uniform liability – and not something that can be selectively deployed, or consulted, or anything – I think it’s just sad. I think it was a mistake."

Queen Alexandria may not have noticed that the minority vote is drifting rightward.

The New York Democrat added that "not a single person" asked her to send an email to people on her "own list," but the party still laid blame on progressives for their defeat.

"The idea that we just accept a collapse in youth turnout – and essentially turn it into a self-fulfilling prophecy – in times when races are decided by such narrow margin points: I think it’s ill advised," she said.

SHORT TAKES ON THE DRIFTING WRECKAGE – OVERNIGHT: 

THE REMARKABLE RACIAL CHANGE – OVERNIGHT, FROM DAILYWIRE:    Joe Biden’s approval rating among African-Americans has dropped significantly during his presidency, as his approval overall continues to slide.  A focus group of African Americans in the states of Michigan, Texas, and Georgia, conducted by Democratic surveyor Navigator Research, found that Biden’s approval among black people fell 10 percentage points over the course of the year 2021, from 86% in January 2021, shortly after Biden took office, to 76% in 2022. Even more surprising, Biden’s approval among black voters under 35 declined by a full 25% over the past year, from 88% in 2021 to just 63% in 2022.  Biden’s base of support was very tepid, the focus group found, with neither enthusiastic support nor intense disapproval. Asked to grade Biden’s “progress report” so far, voters gave him mostly “C” grades, with a few “Ds,” and even fewer “Bs.”  It's possible that a new generation of African Americans will realize that the Democratic Party does little for them, but only values their vote.  This comes as Republicans are finally waking up and reaching out to minorities, with some amazingly positive results.  Never consider any group lost. Or won.  The Dems have taken blacks for granted, as they have Hispanics.  And new polling suggests that both groups are fed up.
